Bernese Mountain Dog
belongs to Group 2 FCI, among other Swiss
Mountain Dogs (Appenzell, Entlebush and
Great Swiss Mountain Dog). The father of
this breed was at the beginning of the
century Professor Albert Heim. Bernese
Mountain Dogs were and are in Switzerland
an integral part of farms, where they
perform many important tasks. Among them,
especially in the past were guarding
farms, pulling carts with milk, but also
watching everything in the stables.
Bernese Mountain Dog is characterized
mainly by its tricolor color, which the
standard quite accurately defines. The
basic color is black, combined with rich
brown-red tan and white. White markings
must be on the dog's head, neck, chest,
paws and tail. Rich brown-red tan is
found above the eyes, on the cheeks,
chest and legs. The standard precisely
defines the height range, for dogs it is
height at withers from 64-70cm, for
bitches in the range of 58-68cm. The coat
should be long, silky and not too curly.
Weight of dogs is around 50 - 60 kg,
females it is about 10 kilograms less.
Due to its striking appearance, but
mainly due to its nature, the Bernese
Mountain Dog is slowly becoming a very
popular dog. He is not aggressive, he
loves people and everything he does for
his master. Properly socialized Bernese
Mountain Dog is confident and balanced.
Due to its nature it is an ideal dog for
a family with children, because with them
is the best friend. Puppies and young
dogs are usually more lively and require
more movement and attention.
Caring for this dog is not difficult.
Brush hair once a week, just at the time
of molting it is necessary to brush the
dog daily. Bernese Mountain Dogs are
durable, love winter and snow, in summer
they like to bathe. If they have dog
house, they can be kept outdoors all
year.
